Combat
How attacks work in Paper Wars, how damage is calculated, what counter-attacks do, and how terrain and range change a fight.
Attacking
Select one of your units, then click an enemy with a red ring around it. A unit can attack when:
- the enemy is within its range, counted in tiles up, down, left and right,
- it is able to hit that kind of unit (land, sea or air, see Units), and
- it hasn't already acted this turn.
You can move first and then attack, but you can't move after attacking.
Damage
Each hit does:
attack + roll − defence − shelter
- attack is the attacker's attack number.
- roll is a random 0, 1 or 2, like a die roll.
- defence is the target's defence number.
- shelter is the terrain bonus if the target is a land unit on forest or mountains. See Terrain.
A hit always does at least 1 damage.
For example, a tank (attack 7) attacking a soldier (defence 1) in a forest (shelter 1) does 7 + roll − 1 − 1, so 5 to 7 damage.
Counter-attacks
If the target survives and can hit back, it fires back straight away at half damage, rounded down and never less than 1. The counter-attack uses the same rules, so the attacker's own defence and shelter count.
A unit can only hit back if the attacker is within its range and is a kind of unit it can target. That makes range a big advantage: a battleship shelling a soldier from three tiles away takes no return fire.
Destroyed units
A unit whose HP falls to zero is removed. If it was carrying other units, they are destroyed with it.
Tips
- Attack with your strongest unit first, so the counter-attack hits a unit that can take it.
- Wounded units still fight at full strength, but they are one lucky roll from being destroyed. Pull them back to a medic.
- Units being carried can't attack or be attacked until they are unloaded.
