Paper Wars

FAQ

Short answers to common Paper Wars questions about turns, combat, carrying units, the computer opponent and online play.

Is Paper Wars free?

Yes. Play in your browser at no cost. You only need an account to play friends online.

Who moves first?

Red always moves first.

Can a unit move and attack in the same turn?

Yes, as long as it moves first. Attacking or healing ends that unit's turn, so it can't move afterwards.

Can units move diagonally?

No. Units move up, down, left and right, and range is counted the same way.

Why can't my tank attack that helicopter?

Each unit can only hit certain kinds of unit. Tanks can hit land and sea units but not aircraft. Soldiers, aircraft carriers and fighter jets can hit aircraft. See Units.

Why didn't the enemy fire back?

A unit only counter-attacks if it survives, the attacker is within its range, and it can target that kind of unit. Long-range units like battleships often attack without taking any return fire.

How is damage worked out?

Damage is the attacker's attack plus a random 0 to 2, minus the target's defence, minus any shelter from forest or mountains. It's always at least 1. Counter-attacks do half. See Combat.

How do I get soldiers across water?

Move them onto a friendly ferry with room, sail it across, and unload them next to the ferry on your next turn. See Healing and transport.

How do I win?

Destroy every enemy unit. In an online game, your opponent can also resign.

How do I play against the computer?

Choose Computer: Easy or Computer: Normal as the opponent, pick a side, and start a new game.

How do I play a friend online?

Sign up and confirm your email. Then start an online match in the game and send your friend the invite link or code. Invites expire after a week if nobody joins.
