Terrain
What the letters on a Paper Wars map mean, how much each terrain costs to cross, and which terrain shelters your units.
Maps are drawn with one letter per square:
.or a blank square is plains.Fis forest.Mis mountains.Wis water.
Movement costs and shelter
Each unit has movement points to spend every turn. Entering a tile costs the number shown below. ✕ means that unit can never enter it.
| Terrain | Letter | Shelter | Soldier, Medic | Tank, Transport | Ferry, Battleship, Aircraft Carrier | Helicopter, Fighter Jet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plains | . |
— | 1 | 1 | ✕ | 1 |
| Forest | F |
−1 damage | 2 | 2 | ✕ | 1 |
| Mountains | M |
−2 damage | 3 | ✕ | ✕ | 1 |
| Water | W |
— | ✕ | ✕ | 1 | 1 |
Shelter cuts the damage a land unit takes while it stands on that tile. A soldier dug into the mountains takes 2 less damage from every hit. Ships and aircraft never get shelter.
Tips
- Forests slow everyone down on foot or wheels, but they shelter your troops.
- Only soldiers and medics can climb mountains. A soldier on a mountain is very hard to dig out.
- Land units can't cross water on their own. Load them onto a ferry, see Healing and transport.
- Aircraft fly straight over everything, which makes them good for reaching distant targets.
